Stock index futures signal mixed Wall Street open

LONDON (Reuters) – Stock futures pointed to a mixed open on Wall Street on Friday, with futures for the S&P 500 rising 0.2 percent, the Dow Jones futures down 0.2 percent and the Nasdaq 100 futures up 0.3 percent.

Apple stepped up audits of working conditions at major suppliers last year, discovering multiple cases of underage workers, discrimination and wage problems.

Samsung Electronics turned cautious on spending for the first time since the global financial crisis, keeping its annual investment plan unchanged at 2012 levels, as demand for computer chips wanes and the smartphone market slows.

Procter & Gamble , the world’s top household products maker, and smaller rival Kimberly-Clark will kick off the earnings season for U.S. household products makers. Halliburton , the world’s second-largest oilfield services company, is also due to report results.

Honeywell , the diversified U.S. manufacturer, will be in focus as it reports earnings, with modest growth in demand for systems used to manage large buildings expected to be offset by declining sales to the military.

The Commerce Department releases new home sales data for December at 1500 GMT. Economists forecast a total of 385,000 annualized units, compared with 377,000 in November.

Economic Cycle Research Institute releases its weekly index of economic activity for January 18 at 1530 GMT. In the prior week the index read 130.

European shares rose 0.1 percent after a survey showed German business morale improved for a third consecutive month in January.

The smallest of gains gave the Standard & Poor’s 500 its seventh straight winning day on Thursday, but the index failed to hold above the 1,500 line, restrained by Apple’s worst day in more than four years.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.33 percent at the close, the S&P 500 ended flat and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.74 percent. Most of the Nasdaq’s loss was due to Apple’s slide of more than 12 percent after disappointing earnings.

Obama supports Pentagon decision to allow women serve in combat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama fully supports the Pentagon’s decision to lift a ban on women serving in frontline combat roles, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Thursday.

Ahead of the Pentagon’s formal announcement later on Thursday, Carney told reporters Obama is “very pleased” with the decision and “fully supports this effort to expand opportunities for women.”

Carney said the recommendation emerged from military commanders, although Obama had discussed it with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and others.

Numark iDJ Live II DJ controller hands-on

Numark iDJ Live II DJ controller hands-on

If there’s one company that comprehensively caters to the entry-level and intermediate DJ, there’s a good chance it’s Numark. While the firm has released a whole bunch of stuff at NAMM this year, perhaps its most mainstream offering is the iDJ Live II. If you remember the original, it was a lightweight controller (both physically, and metaphorically) designed for use with Djay on iOS. This time around the little fella gets a redesign, and a few functionality tweaks. Most notable, is that while the first iteration only gave you the option of iOS connectivity — via the 30-pin adaptor — this time you have the choice of Lightning, 30-pin, or straight up USB. Thus, you can now bring the iDJ Live II out to work with your Mac or PC, too. Once again, it’s built with Algoriddim’s Djay in mind, be it the desktop or iOS version, and we got our hands on it to take it for a spin. Head past the break for the lowdown.

First things first. This is very much a fun, consumer product. It would be unfair to call it an accessory, but it’s definitely meant for casual use at parties etc. The unit itself is very light, made entirely of plastic, and feels very different to the heavier DJ controllers you might be used to. The iDJ Live II, however, does look much better than the first iteration, with the slightly squared design and the lower-profile platters at least making it look a little less toy-like than before. The plastic finish still feels the same, as does the action and resistance of the platters, knobs and faders (which is serviceable). The controls available give you everything you need to perform all the mixing basics, with high and low-frequency EQ, channel volume control, a crossfader, and even rudimentary scratching (though it really is more of a novelty). If you’ve ever used Djay for any amount of time though, you’ll know that this is plenty enough to get a set going, and having the physical controller there just makes it all that more enjoyable / easy. While purists and old hands might see products such as these as over simplified, the ease of use, and broad appeal makes them ideal for the curious, and that can only be a good thing. Sadly there is no word on price or availability at this time, but we’d be surprised if it wasn’t comfortably under $100 when it does finally make its way onto shelves. Check the video below for the hardware tour.

PFT: Study finds CTE in living former players

    Is-Seaus-death-part-of-a-bigger-issue-VI1DP6AF-x-largeGetty Images

The complaint filed by the estate and four children of linebacker Junior Seau contains claims and allegations typical of the thousands of other concussion lawsuits.? For example, the lawsuit refers to the NFL?s glorification of violent play via videos sold by NFL Films, quoting Seau from a 1993 offering in which he says, ?If I can feel some dizziness, I know that guy is feeling double [that].?

But the lawsuit contains a lengthy and detailed explanation of the symptoms Seau suffered in the years prior to his death.? The complaint explains that, as early as the mid-1990s, Seau was demonstrating ?dizziness and other symptoms of concussion,? with a ?noted change in his behavior and functioning.?? He began, according to the lawsuit, to become ?erratic,? and he showed ?emotional instability.?? The complaints refers to persistent insomnia dating back to the mid-1990s, and contends that he became ?forgetful and unable to concentrate or focus.?

?Both at work and at home, people noticed that he could not remember their discussions, he misplaced things and forgot appointments,? the complaint alleges.

Seau also began to demonstrate ?self-destructive, aggressive and violent behavior,? along with ?severe depression,? during which episodes he became ?irrational and unreachable.?? He ?lashed out verbally and physically at his staff, friends, and family,? and he ?entered a devastating cycle of depression and alcohol abuse.?

The lawsuit further claims that he became ?a compulsive, manic gambler,? which led to ?gambling binges? resulting in the loss of ?significant amounts of money.?

While the timeline of the various manifestations of alleged brain damage isn?t clear, the fact that Seau began to show symptoms as early as the mid-1990s gives rise to an obvious question:? Why did he keep playing football?

Moreover, the long list of symptoms highlights one of the biggest challenges Seau?s lawyers will face.? Arguably, the NFL was fully aware of the risks of concussions in October 2009, once the NFL acknowledged the problem to Congress and began to make significant changes in the management of players who have suffered brain injuries.? If, at that point, Seau was exhibiting symptoms (and based on the lawsuit he clearly was), the two-year clock began to tick.? And, as the NFL surely will argue, it expired more than six months before his death.

?We were saddened to learn that Junior, a loving father and teammate, suffered from CTE,? Seau?s family said in a statement.? ?While Junior always expected to have aches and pains from his playing days, none of us ever fathomed that he would suffer a debilitating brain disease that would cause him to leave us too soon.?

This suggests that the Seau lawsuit will hinge on the argument that the window for filing suit didn?t open until Seau was diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephelopathy, after his death.? While a court may agree, there?s a good chance that the case will be dismissed fairly quickly, under the argument that Seau was having cognitive problems years in advance, and that his deadline for filing a lawsuit expired before he died.

Netflix streaming most dominant on HDTVs, more than double PC and tablets

As it turns out, the general public — even us heathens who’ve cut the cord — like watching video content on televisions rather than monitors. A stat chart culled from The NPD Group’s, “Connected Intelligence Report, Application & Convergence” revealed the latest US-centric news on Netflix Instant usage; it puts HDTV use far above that of more traditional platforms like PCs and laptops. Averaged across age groups, 40 percent of people using Netflix Instant in the US are doing so on HDTVs, while just 14 percent are going through computers (both desktops and laptops). That’s not just Smart TVs, but also, “another device connected to the TV” — so that’s game consoles, streaming boxes, and software level built-in streaming.

A mere 13 percent are using the service on tablets, and a paltry 8 percent are streaming on smartphones (a stat David Lynch would assuredly relish). Unsurprisingly, users are primarily of the younger variety: over 50 percent of 18 to 25-year-olds make up the HDTV statistic, and that group makes up nearly a full quarter of PC folks. Of course, none of this is a huge surprise to anyone that’s ever tried comfortably watching anything longer than a few minutes on a 13-inch laptop screen. Check out the full chart just below.
